PURE SCIENCE

Pure Science

Born in London on Nov 29th 1972, Phivos (Phoebos) was raised in a musical family and it quickly became apparent that the passion had been inherited. By the time he was 11 he had an addiction for synths. As a teenager his taste became more electronically inclined by the success of bands such as Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, John Foxx, Ultravox & Japan. At the age of 16 he already had a basic collection of analog synths/drum machines and had played In a number of bands as a keyboard player. His love of Detroit Techno / Chicago House emerged from going to the early warehouse parties and underground clubs in and around London back in ’88, ’89.

Knowing that he wanted a career in the industry Phivos (aged 15) started work as a tape op in a studio run by pirate radio station “lightning FM” who had heard one of his tapes. In return for his willing and very able assistance during the day, he was given free studio time and every night he would be locked in with a sleeping bag and a pot noodle. Due to the sounds that he was creating, the guys nicknamed Phil “The Scientist.” They were putting on parties with Jumpin Jack Frost and Bryan G. at the time.

At “Passion 90” at The Fridge (which was run by this crew) Phivos played live along side Shut Up and Dance and was heard by GTI Records (know Kickin). The label introduced Phivos to DJ Hype and they formed an alliance creating tracks such as the The Exorcist, The Bee and Kick Squad (Champion Sound), continuing to use the name the Scientist amongst others pseudonyms such as Audio illusion and Pure Science…

Through the support of Fantasy FM and other London pirates, their debut single “The Exorcist” reached No. 1 in the dance charts (43 National No. 1 Independent Charts) and was voted Track of 1990 by Kiss FM. on their first year of going legal. The Scientist toured the UK, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Russia playing live and gaining immense TV and press coverage throughout 90 and 91. Phil became recognized as a talented producer and worked freelance with artists such as Mica Paris, Malcom McLaren and Terry Hail. As his music developed so did Phil. He dropped the name The Scientist and the Pure Science concept evolved…

Releasing on Rehab via Zoom Records 1996 “Africa”, Vinyl being played out to many a grooving dance floor by many of the top international DJ’s, the Hard work and consistent projects led Phil to Lunar Tunes (Eddie Richards’ label) in 1997 where he released various works under the names of SCI-Fi and the DeRanger Collaborations with Eddie.

1998 saw Pure Science signing his label distribution via Prime for Worldwide export, and later picking up Muzik Magazines (sponsored by Ericsson) Best New DJ award which lead to a massive surge of international bookings, and later a bi-monthly residency @ Fabric nightclub London.

Phivos was meanwhile releasing the occasional release on Eukahouse or the End label, Various e.p’s on the P.S. Communications imprint. The year 2001 saw a new sister label B+Positive (like the blood group) which is currently only on its fifth release. An Album on Fabric and two releases by Croatian Producer “Davor” signed as a guest to B+positive.

The year 2005 saw two quality releases on P.S. Communications & B+positive the Science has been Studio Bound getting on his Latest Licks J and working on an Artist Album for P. S. Communications & B+positive. Some New Ambient / Dub Works for a future chillout Mushroom vibe album (Summer release?)…

[ASD003] EDDIE RICHARDS MEETS PURE SCIENCE
ABSURD BEHAVIOR >>

Nice set of moods and vibes on this entire EP, getting off to a warm start with the late night Detroit-meets-London styled trippiness of "Absurd Behavior" - stripped down drums, deep synth washes and spacey voices galore. The other cuts walk a tightrope between tough dancefloor grooves and more abstract adventures.
